With the current state of affairs, more and more companies are mandating their employees work from home for the foreseeable future. Although working from home can be a nice change of pace from time to time, if you aren’t used to it distractions can easily quell your productivity.

The Summa Media team believes in giving our employees flexibility which means many of our team members opt to work from home during snowstorms or on an as needed basis. After having logged many hours working from our home offices — or kitchen tables — we consider ourselves to be pros at staying on task when working from home.

To help you navigate this turbulent time, the Summa Media team is sharing our productivity tips for working from home. Keep reading below for our advice and if you have any tips of your own to add, feel free to chime in down in the comments section!

 

Establish Working Hours

Establish clear cut working hours, just as if you were going into the office. If you like to log on for the day by 8:00am, don’t roll out of bed at 7:55am. Give yourself time to drink a cup of coffee, make breakfast, and shower before starting your day.

Likewise, don’t bring your work to the couch with you at the end of the day. Define what time will serve as the end of your workday and stick to it. Close your laptop, turn off notifications on your phone, and leave it all in the other room.

 

Establish Boundaries

Establish boundaries with your housemates — children, partners, and roommates — around your work hours and work space. Ask them to pretend that you are across town in the office as usual and tell them that they are not to interrupt you during certain hours of the day unless it is an absolute emergency. We recommend providing children with books, crafts, games, and chores in order to keep them occupied.

 

Over Communicate

The Summa Media team has found that over communication is one of the major keys to a successful work from home set up. Some managers and colleagues tend to get nervous when they can’t physically see what their team is doing. Keep your manager up to date on the status of your current projects and communicate your needs clearly for peace of mind on all sides.

 

Move Your Body

At the end of a work from home day, the Summa Media team sometimes finds that our step count is pretty far away from our usual goal. You don’t realize how little you move when confined to the house and to mitigate this it is important to focus on intentional movement.

Find workout videos that you love and that require little space. Try streaming them at the beginning or end of your work day, whenever you would normally be hitting the gym. Throughout the day find little ways to add in extra movement. Our favorite hack is to do 50 jumping jacks every time we use the restroom!

 

Embrace the Added Time

It is extremely rare in this day and age to have extra time, but not going into the office gives you hours back into your day. Not only are you not commuting, you also don’t have to blow dry your hair, pack a lunch, or drop the kids at daycare! Use this extra time to connect with your loved ones, start that side hustle you’ve been delaying, or just catch up on your favorite show!

During these crazy times it is more important than ever to lean on one another. Even if we can’t physically be together, that doesn’t mean you are alone. Reach out to your colleagues, friends, and far-away family to check in on them, they will probably appreciate the gesture more than you know.
